As the world becomes more complex, writing a journal is one of the most important things that everyone can do.
Writing things down on paper helps you get your life in order, gives you clarity in your decisions, helps you organise your life and just makes everything you do that much easier.
What Is Journalling?
Journalling is like creating a movie of your life that you get to write, star in, direct and edit yourself.
It is the process of capturing your thoughts on paper, or writing a diary. It is keeping a log of your life.
At a more complex level, it is about having a good journal system that helps you run your life on every level.
Reasons to Journal
Keeping a journal gives you a number of benefits.
It lets you record what has happened every single day of your life.
It also lets you look back and see what has happened on past days—what you managed to do, not do and what you would like to have done. This in turn creates a level of self-awareness through reflection, revising and learning new things for future planning.
If you decide to use a journal tactically as well, it can help you store your tasks, goals, outcomes and processes for any given day, so that you can keep yourself organised.
Different Types of Journals
There are many types of journal entries that you can write. Here are a few of the more popular ones.
The first is the once-per-day journal entry. This is where you literally use a new page or create a new entry every single day and everything just goes in here. You put in your thoughts, your feelings, your tasks, your goals, your photos and anything else you want.
The second is an all-day journal which is popular with apps like Day One. In this type of journal, you simply record the thoughts that you have when you have them, and let the app organise them into days and memories for you.
The third is a photo journal, which is where you take photos or videos of what you do during the day and capture your journey bit-by-bit. A private Instagram account is perfect for this.
How to Get Started With Journals
Here is a three-step process to getting started with journal entries.
First, decide on your medium.
Some people prefer pen and paper. Some people prefer their phones or camera. And some people prefer apps with cloud sync between their phone and computer. Whatever you like, pick one and stick with it.
Second, decide on your structure.
Will you journal multiple times per day? Once per day? Morning and evening only?
If you are having trouble deciding, start with once per day.
Lastly, create a bit of a template to help get things moving.
Ask yourself what you want to cover daily in your journal entries—things like what happened, what you wanted to do, and how you felt about it. And then make sure you answer those things daily.
And that’s all you need to do to get started with journal entries!
